In small organisations it is not usually cost effective to:
- have one person who is trained to keep up to date with changes in PAYE and NI rules; and
- purchase and update payroll software
The operation of payroll has become increasingly complex now the employer has to deal with Tax Credits and Student Loan Repayments through the payroll.
We regularly come across instances where errors have been made in processing. Typically, these may include:
- calculation errors in working out PAYE and NI deductions;
- failure to deal with “casual” employees or “self-employed contractors” correctly;
- incorrect completion of end of year returns;
- failure to complete forms P11d or P9d
Often the only time that these problems are picked up is during a PAYE or NI control visit. Naturally, the Inland Revenue are looking for extra money, and on a majority of visits to small businesses, this is exactly what they find.
